The island city-state first rose to prominence in the 1800s, when Sir Stamford Raffles (namesake of the iconic Raffles Hotel) recognized Singapore’s strategic location and established a trading post for the East India Trading Company.
Strategic moves have been key to on-going success. Following independence from Great Britain in 1965, Singapore’s government has focused on economic growth through manufacturing and banking while putting resources towards education, health care and — most famously — stunning architecture.
Singapore has also grown into a multi-cultural hub, with Malay, Southeast Asian and European cultures reflected in the country’s delicious food scene.
