To start, a bit of background: Polar Class (PC) refers to a ship’s ability to navigate and break through ice throughout the year. On a scale of 1–7, PC1 ships offer year-round operations in all polar waters; PC7 ships are able to cruise through first year ice in the summer and autumnal months only. Le Commandant Charcot, the only passenger ship in the world with a PC2 classified hull, is able to navigate through multiyear ice, often between 6 and 13 feet thick.

PONANT SCIENCE

PONANT SCIENCE is a pioneering program to support scientific research and bring researchers aboard the PONANT ships to learn more about the ocean, the least known ecosystem on our planet.

Le Commandant Charcot has two research laboratories and autonomous measurement instruments. Several long-term scientific partners enable teams of biologists, geographers, oceanographers, climatologists and ethnologists to work in polar regions on a repeat basis in places that are either still unexplored or rarely visited, allowing them to extend their polar campaigns.

Select sailings include transfers from the airport to the ship and/or from the ship to the airport on embarkation and/or disembarkation day. On select sailings, flight(s) may be included, based on availability at the time of booking. Fight schedule is indicated on the electronic ticket included in the travel documents.
